Iran has resumed the operation of the SMS messaging service on Saturday, which had been suspended for nine days by authorities following massive protests in the country. The Tasnim news agency confirmed the reactivation of SMS, but international messages and global internet access remain blocked. Authorities interrupted communications on January 8, amid escalating protests that began on December 28, initially due to the collapse of the rial.
The protests escalated into acts of vandalism, and Tehran reported the arrest of at least 3,000 people, whom it labeled as "terrorists." Opposition NGOs estimate a much higher number of arrests and deaths, while calm has begun to return to the country, although the police presence remains strong.
