These protests, which began on December 28 and escalated on January 8, led to brutal interventions by the security forces, resulting in thousands of deaths. Although there is no official death toll, the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, mentioned 'thousands of people killed,' accusing the protesters of foreign influence. Despite the repression, information about the violence has been transmitted abroad via satellite connections. Authorities in Tehran claim they have regained control and have reopened schools and universities, which had previously been closed.
