The President of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated on Saturday that peace negotiations between Iran and the United States have "made progress", but a final agreement is "still far off".
In an interview with Iranian television, Ghalibaf mentioned that he participated in discussions with American officials last week in Islamabad. Although progress has been made, he emphasized that there are numerous divergences and that certain fundamental points "remain in suspense".
The main point of divergence is related to the Iranian nuclear program, regarding which Iran refuses to make any concessions.
Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz again, in retaliation for the continued blockade of its ports by the United States of America. Shortly after this announcement, at least three commercial vessels attempting to cross the strait were targeted by gunfire.
Donald Trump reacted harshly to Tehran's new position change, stating that he will not yield in the face of the blockade imposed by Iran on the Strait of Hormuz: "They cannot blackmail us".
