The unexplained death of 15 elephants in a month in the Amboseli National Park in Kenya has prompted the Wildlife Service (KWS) to open an investigation.

Between June 24 and July 24, 2026, ten of the elephants exhibited similar symptoms, including partial paralysis, which prevented them from standing on their feet, leading to death within one or two days. Five other carcasses were too deteriorated to determine the cause of death.

Veterinarians conducted post-mortem examinations and collected samples, and preliminary results suggest the presence of an unidentified toxic substance. KWS continues its research to determine the source of the contamination.

Amboseli Park, known for its rich wildlife, is an important habitat for elephants, located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
