The Indian authorities are working on an initial plan to restrict the minimum temperature of air conditioners to 20 degrees Celsius as part of efforts to increase energy efficiency in the face of rising electricity demand. These appliances consume about 50 Gigawatts, accounting for one-fifth of the country's total energy consumption. Temperature limits could reduce electricity use by 6% for every degree Celsius, saving resources during peak periods. Electricity demand has recently hit a record high, and authorities face challenges in securing the energy needed.
