Before the Houthi announcement regarding the deaths of civilians in Sana’a, Saudi Arabia reported over the weekend that it had intercepted and destroyed four drones over the Riyadh regions and other areas, amid an intensification of attacks launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Saudi forces had also announced the interception of missiles and drones with reported targets including areas near the capital.
At the same time, allegations circulated in Yemen regarding Saudi strikes on urban areas: media close to the Houthis reported that attacks by the Riyadh-led coalition had killed at least 22 people in Sana’a, with women and children making up most of the victims, without independent confirmation. During the same period, Yemeni government forces, supported by the popular resistance, announced that they had repelled a rebel attack on the al-Aqroud front, in Taiz province.
The escalation was framed in earlier reports by repeated Houthi attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia, including airports and oil facilities, with Riyadh reiterating that it rejects a ceasefire without the recapture of territories recently taken by the Houthis.
