Hong Kong has dethroned Switzerland, becoming for the first time the largest global center for offshore wealth management, with international assets managed worth approximately 2.9 trillion dollars by 2025. About 60% of these funds come from mainland China, and estimates suggest that the gap compared to Switzerland will increase by nearly 600 billion dollars by the end of the decade.
The rise of Hong Kong is supported by the relaunch of capital markets and the ability of Chinese companies to attract external financing. Wealthy investors are diversifying their assets across multiple jurisdictions to protect themselves from geopolitical tensions and political instability, strengthening the role of major global financial centers.
Currently, two main axes are emerging: Hong Kong and Singapore in Asia, and Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the USA in the west. Although Switzerland remains a safe place for traditional wealth, Hong Kong and Singapore are expanding their operations to take advantage of the rapid growth of Asian wealth. Dubai has also become an important financial center, but the assets managed there are still below the levels of Hong Kong and Switzerland.
