The American Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, intervened to block or delay the promotions of over ten senior officers of color and women from all branches of the U.S. military, actions that have raised concerns among military officials and at the White House.
According to NBC News, Hegseth is accused of targeting officers based on race, gender, or political affiliation, particularly in the context of the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives promoted by the Biden administration. Concerns grew after Hegseth dismissed the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Randy George, who requested a meeting to discuss the blocking of promotions. Hegseth has been criticized for accusing the military of promoting officers based on diversity rather than merit.
Officials also reported that the promotions of three Marine officers, two women and one man of color, were blocked without valid reasons. Hegseth has been accused of also exerting influence over the promotion process, which could undermine trust in the military system.
