David Vocat, the head of the firefighters in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, was interviewed by the police as a witness following the devastating fire on New Year's Eve, which resulted in the deaths of 41 people and injured another 115. His hearing was anticipated by the lawyers of the civil parties, in the context of a recent audit that highlighted serious gaps in local fire safety.
Lawyer Alain Viscolo expressed disappointment over the delay of the audit report, emphasizing that expectations were high, but the results were disappointing.
The investigation targets the circumstances of the fire, the compliance with safety regulations by the owners of the bar Le Constellation, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, as well as the responsibilities of other officials. The tragedy was caused by fireworks mounted on champagne bottle corks, which ignited the soundproof foam in the ceiling, triggering the fire.
Swiss authorities have opened an investigation for manslaughter through negligence and other charges.
