Hamas acknowledged on Monday the death of its spokesman, Hudhayfa al-Kahlout, known as Abu Obeida, following an Israeli airstrike in August. This is the first time the Palestinian militant group publicly confirms the death of a prominent figure. Abu Obeida's death was announced by Israel on August 31, but Hamas did not specify details about the circumstances of his death.
The confirmation came in the context of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who are discussing a U.S.-mediated ceasefire in Gaza, threatened by a possible stalemate. Abu Obeida was an emblematic figure of Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, and was known for his provocative messages towards Israel.
Hamas released a video of the new spokesman, who stated that he refuses disarmament, contrary to the ceasefire agreement. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas attack led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians. Since the ceasefire began on October 10, the Gaza Ministry of Health has reported 414 deaths and 1,142 injuries, with a total of at least 71,266 Palestinians killed in the war.
