Multiple gunshots were heard in the Philippine Senate on Wednesday evening, where Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a former police chief and wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), sought refuge to avoid arrest. Dela Rosa, known for his involvement in the war on drugs during Rodrigo Duterte's presidency, has been targeted by an international arrest warrant issued in November.
The Senate President, Alan Peter Cayetano, announced that they are under attack, without providing further details. Dela Rosa has called on the military to stop the attempts at his arrest and has requested peaceful support from his colleagues in the armed forces.
In front of the Senate, about 500 riot police confronted protesters demanding his arrest. Dela Rosa has not been seen in public since November, and the new Senate leadership has stated that it will allow his arrest only with the authorization of a Philippine court.
