The organization Greenpeace has accused the Slovak government of 'illegal killing' of bears in an area close to the border with Poland, where these animals are strictly protected. In April, the Slovak government approved the killing of 350 bears, citing danger to humans and the increasing number of them. Greenpeace has filed a complaint with the European Commission, emphasizing that bears frequently cross the border and that Slovakia's decision violates European legislation. Poland has asked Slovakia to stop the hunting in the border area, but without success. Slovakia must comply with an EU directive that allows the killing of bears only in cases of damage or threats, and this year about 20 bear attacks have been reported in Slovakia, where between 1,000 and 1,275 bears live.
