The Greek authorities have begun to take measures to limit the spread of the rabbitfish, an invasive species that causes problems for fishermen and tourism in the Mediterranean Sea. Originally from the Red Sea, the rabbitfish reached the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal and has rapidly spread in the waters of Greece, benefiting from rising temperatures and a lack of natural predators. Fishermen from islands such as Crete and Rhodes are facing significant losses, losing approximately 8,500 euros annually due to the destruction of nets and reduced catches. Additionally, tourists have reported bites from these fish, increasing pressure on authorities for quick solutions. The Greek government has launched a pilot program whereby fishermen are financially rewarded for each kilogram of rabbitfish captured, along with fuel subsidies. Officials acknowledge that complete eradication of the species is not realistic, but they are focusing on limiting the population through interventions during breeding periods.
