Greece has decided to invest 420 million euros in the modernization of rail transport, through an agreement with Hellenic Train, a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato from Italy. This investment includes the purchase of 23 electric trains from Alstom, being the largest private investment in the history of Greek land transport and the first major acquisition of rolling stock since the 2004 Olympic Games.

The announcement comes two years after a tragic train accident in which 57 people died, generating public protests and criticism of the government for privatizations that affected safety. Of the total amount, 112 million euros will be allocated to infrastructure, while the rest will be for the Coradia Stream electric trains. The delivery of the trains is scheduled for 2027, and they will be equipped with the most modern European safety systems.
