The Greek Ministry of Environment has declared a hydrological state of emergency for the Athens area and the islands of Patmos and Leros, in response to the increased risk of water shortages, exacerbated by a persistent drought. This measure aims to prioritize the implementation of essential infrastructure projects, without currently imposing restrictions on water consumption. Data shows a 25% decrease in precipitation nationwide, a 15% increase in evaporation, and a 6% rise in water demand compared to 2022. The Minister of Environment, Stavors Papastavrou, emphasized the need for better planning, especially in tourist areas, to avoid water crises during the summer. In this context, the Greek government has announced a €2.5 billion investment program for hydraulic infrastructure, including projects such as the diversion of the Aheloos River tributaries and desalination facilities, aimed at improving water resource management.
