Germany intends to sign an agreement in the coming weeks to purchase an initial batch of Bars cruise missiles developed in Ukraine, according to the Financial Times, cited by Mediafax. The first technical tests are scheduled for early 2027, and if the weapons meet Bundeswehr requirements, Berlin could order several hundred units.
The Bars missiles can strike targets up to 1,000 kilometers away and carry a payload of up to 105 kilograms, depending on the version. Ukraine uses them to attack military bases and energy infrastructure targets in Russia.
The purchase would represent the first known case of Germany buying offensive weaponry developed in Ukraine for its own armed forces. Bars production has already begun in Germany as well, through a Ukrainian-German joint venture created as part of the “Build with Ukraine” program. The first batch manufactured on German territory was delivered to Ukraine in October.
Berlin is seeking cheaper and more rapidly available alternatives to American Tomahawk missiles, which cost four to six million dollars per unit, while deliveries might not begin until the 2030s. Germany is also analyzing the American Anthem missiles and has so far postponed the purchase of the Ukrainian Flamingo system, which has a declared range of up to 3,000 kilometers.
