Working parents in Germany could have fewer days off to care for sick children starting on January 1, 2027, if the system introduced during the pandemic is not extended. Health Minister Carsten Linnemann announced in the Bundestag that the special rules should expire at the end of 2026.
Currently, each parent can receive 15 days per year for each sick child, while single parents are entitled to 30 days. From 2027, the pre-pandemic rules would return: 10 days for each child and parent, or 20 days for single parents. For families with several children, annual limits apply: 35 days for one parent and 70 days for a single parent.
The so-called Kinderkrankentage are generally granted for children up to 12 years old. If the legal requirements are met, the parent may receive Kinderkrankengeld, a benefit that usually amounts to 90% of the lost net income. The entitlement also applies to Romanian citizens insured in Germany, regardless of citizenship. The current rules will remain valid until December 31, 2026.
