Families in Germany can benefit from around 150 forms of state support, from pregnancy through the child’s 18th birthday. However, many forms of assistance do not reach their intended recipients because parents are unaware of all their entitlements or are discouraged by complicated administrative procedures.
According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, raising a first child cost approximately 174,096 euros up to the age of 18, based on figures from 2018. The amount is likely higher today due to inflation, excluding income losses caused by parents reducing their working hours.
Support begins before birth through maternity protection, maternity benefits and protection against dismissal. After birth, parents can receive Kindergeld, worth 259 euros per month for each child starting in January 2026. For some families, Kinderfreibetrag, the tax allowance automatically assessed by the authorities, may be more advantageous.
Another important benefit is Elterngeld, which can amount to up to 1,800 euros per month and is granted based on previous income. Options such as ElterngeldPlus and the partnership bonus are also available. Families with low incomes can apply for Kinderzuschlag, Wohngeld or support for education and participation, including school trips, clubs and music lessons. However, these benefits must be applied for separately, sometimes from different authorities, and their provision is limited in time.
