The Parliament of Georgia has adopted a law that prohibits voting from abroad, requiring citizens to vote only within the territory of the country starting in 2028.

The Parliament of Georgia recently adopted amendments to the Electoral Code, banning voting from abroad for Georgian citizens. The amendments were approved with 79 votes 'for' and 11 'against', and the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, stated that these changes will reduce the influence of external forces on elections and will allow citizens to make more informed choices.

The ban will be applied for the first time in the parliamentary elections of 2028. In the 2024 elections, the authorities organized 60 polling stations abroad, where approximately 34,000 Georgians voted. The opposition, represented by the United National Movement, accuses the government of trying to reduce the participation of emigrants, who generally vote against the ruling party, Georgian Dream. The government has rejected these accusations, stating that the right to vote is not lost, but citizens must return to the country to vote.
