The Iranian state television announced the arrest of four foreign citizens, whose nationality has not been disclosed, in the context of violent riots in January. The arrests took place following a raid in Tehran province, where authorities discovered four stun grenades in the backpack of one of the suspects, used during the protests.

Iran accuses Israel and the United States of involvement in these riots, which have led to thousands of deaths, most of whom are described as members of security forces or bystanders, killed by 'terrorists'.

Non-governmental organizations accuse law enforcement of deliberate attacks on protesters. At the end of January, other arrests of foreign citizens were also reported in western Iran.
