David J. Rush, a 49-year-old former senior CIA official, pleaded guilty in the United States to wire fraud in a case in which he is accused of using his position and government funds to purchase luxury properties, gold, and personal goods. The estimated loss to the federal government is approximately $194 million.
Following a search of his home in Virginia, investigators seized around 300 gold bars, valued at approximately $46 million, $2 million in cash, and about 35 luxury watches. Prosecutors allege that Rush invented classified government programs to justify illegal transactions.
According to court documents, he allegedly attempted to fraudulently authorize the release of $100 million and transfer another $145 million to a holding company controlled through intermediaries. The funds were allegedly used to purchase properties in Florida and for private charter flights.
Investigators say that Rush also falsified his education and his experience as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He also allegedly disclosed the identity of a secret American source to a foreign official.
Sentencing is scheduled for January 28, and the maximum penalty for wire fraud is 20 years in prison.
