Jason Arday, a former professor of the sociology of education at the University of Cambridge, was found dead on Friday at his home in South London, at the age of 41. His death has been deemed unexpected, but is not being treated as suspicious by the Metropolitan Police. Arday resigned last week after allegations of plagiarism and questions regarding his achievements emerged, which he denied, acknowledging however errors in his work.
The controversy was amplified by another academic, Nathan Cofnas, who claimed to have discovered instances of plagiarism in Arday's work. He stated that some errors were caused by his autism, explaining that he relied on imitation to understand information. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded him his doctorate, concluded that he did not plagiarize. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge expressed condolences to the family, highlighting the tragic impact of the situation on the academic community. Arday stated that public pressure and the allegations had a profound impact on him and his loved ones.
