The local administration in Florence has decided to extend the existing rules for short-term tourist rentals to other new neighborhoods, in an attempt to combat the effects of excessive tourism on local life. The decision, which is set to be officially approved on June 4, will prohibit the opening of new tourist accommodations in these areas, affecting nearly 70,000 residences.
Mayor Sara Funaro, who began her term in 2024, has made the fight against mass tourism a priority. The new rules impose strict obligations on owners of tourist apartments, including registration in a special registry and obtaining a valid permit for five years. Florence thus becomes a symbol of the fight against 'hyper-tourism', considering that the city received 4.7 million tourists in 2025. Critics argue that the explosion of tourist rentals affects housing prices, and other European cities, such as Barcelona, have implemented similar measures. The decision has generated political controversy, with right-wing parties accusing the administration of a lack of dialogue with property owners.
