Fidesz, the party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, reacted vehemently to the decision of the liberal mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karacsony, to illuminate the Chain Bridge in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. The criticisms were amplified by recent threats from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the halt of Russian oil deliveries to Hungary. Fidesz believes that the mayor should defend Hungary's interests, not support Ukraine, and emphasized that the Hungarian government opposes Ukraine's rapid accession to the EU for economic and political reasons.
