Jameel Jaffer, the director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, expressed concern over the FBI's search of journalist Hannah Natanson's home at the Washington Post, highlighting the chilling effect on legitimate journalistic activity. Natanson, who covered the Trump administration's restructuring campaign, is not the subject of the investigation, but rather a system administrator from Maryland accused of stealing classified information.

Searches of journalists are extremely rare, and Jaffer noted that there are significant limits on the government's authority to intervene in activities protected by the First Amendment. Recent changes in the Department of Justice's policy suggest an escalation in the pursuit of journalists to identify sources of information leaks, raising concerns about press freedom.
