U.S. authorities searched Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar’s home in the Washington, D.C., area on Monday as part of an ongoing federal investigation. The warrant was authorized by a judge and obtained by the Department of Justice.
According to Fox News Digital, which cited unidentified sources, the criminal investigation concerns possible fraud related to the immigration documents of the politician, who was born in Somalia. The documents were allegedly completed by her father, who has since died, when Ilhan Omar was a child. The Department of Justice did not provide details about the exact nature of the investigation.
The search was carried out by investigators from the Department of Homeland Security’s investigative service. The operation is taking place just over three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, in which President Donald Trump’s Republicans are seeking to retain their fragile majorities in Congress.
Ilhan Omar, a vocal critic of Trump, has repeatedly been targeted by him. The politician said that she and her family had received death threats amid the anti-immigration and anti-Muslim rhetoric promoted by the president. Last month, a man from Minnesota was sentenced to one year and two months in prison after attacking her with vinegar.
