An explosion occurred on Thursday morning at the port of Rotterdam, resulting in the death of one person and the injury of several others. According to a spokesperson for the Rotterdam police, the explosion took place on Moezelweg around 11:30 AM (0930 GMT), and the cause remains unclear and is under investigation.
The police announced that the area has been cordoned off to allow for the investigation to take place. At the same time, Gunvor Energy, which manages petroleum product tanks near the port, reported a separate 'incident' during maintenance activities that led to the injury of several people. Gunvor representatives stated that they are cooperating with local authorities.
Power outages have also been reported at the port of Rotterdam, and authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between these and the explosion. The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and includes an oil refinery and several petrochemical facilities.
