Rents in Ibiza have risen so high that many locals are forced to live in caravans or tents, while others share cramped apartments. Activists accuse landlords of preferring short-term rentals to long-term ones. Nearly 800 people live in makeshift settlements and a one-bedroom apartment costs €1,500, in contrast to the minimum wage of €1,381. The situation has led to a shortage of teachers and medical staff, and local authorities have started to crack down on illegal tenancies, imposing substantial fines.
