European leaders reacted to the joint military attacks by the USA and Israel on Iran, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury", highlighting the risks of conflict escalation in the Middle East. The European Commission and the EU Council stated that developments in Iran are "very concerning" and reaffirmed the EU's commitment to protecting regional security. French President Emmanuel Macron called the attacks a "outbreak of war" and called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council. Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa urged restraint and respect for international law. Kaja Kallas described the situation as "dangerous", emphasizing the threats posed by the Iranian regime. In the context of the attacks, Macron called on Iran to negotiate to halt its nuclear and ballistic programs. The European Union has imposed extensive sanctions on Iran in response to human rights violations and nuclear proliferation activities. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, warned of a possible escalation spiral of the conflict.
