The European Commission has detailed measures to ban Russian gas imports into the EU by 2027, proposing a phased ban. New contracts will be banned from 2026 and existing short-term contracts will be suspended until June 17, 2026. Exceptions will be made for landlocked countries. The legislative proposal, which requires a qualified majority, aims to avoid the vetoes of Hungary and Slovakia, and member states are obliged to present supply diversification plans by March 2026.
