The European Commission stresses the importance of maintaining the conditionality mechanism for EU funds, which can suspend aid to countries that break the rule of law. This mechanism is currently being applied to Hungary, where Prime Minister Viktor Orban contests the grounds for suspension as ideological. There is also a lack of transparency in NGO funding. Orban has called for legislative action against organizations receiving foreign funds, accusing them of undermining national sovereignty. Brussels has suspended cohesion funds and other aid to Hungary because of these violations.
