Approximately 30,000 bottles of wine, valued at nearly five million euros, were stolen from a warehouse belonging to a renowned winery in Tuscany, Italy. The theft allegedly took place on Saturday, but the disappearance of the bottles was not noticed until Monday morning, when employees returned to the premises.
According to the Italian press, at least seven masked men disabled the alarm systems and shut down the surveillance cameras. The thieves then allegedly used the company's forklifts to load two large trucks with collectible red wines, including Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso.
The stolen bottles usually sell for between 150 and 500 euros each. The winery's management believes that the selection of varieties indicates that the perpetrators knew the wine market and may have benefited from insider information.
The company's chief executive said that this is the largest wine theft of its kind in Italy. He hopes that footage from surveillance cameras on roads in Tuscany will help identify the trucks' route and recover at least part of the goods. So far, no suspects have been detained.
The incident is not an isolated one. This year, two other thefts of wine bottles worth hundreds of thousands of euros were reported in the Piedmont region.
