European Union regulators have initiated an antitrust investigation against Meta Platforms, accusing the company of blocking competitors' access to artificial intelligence (AI) features in the WhatsApp application. This measure could lead to a temporary suspension of the launch of new AI features.
Brussels warns that Meta's actions could hinder third-party AI providers from offering their services in the European Economic Area. Meta denies the allegations, claiming that the WhatsApp API is not intended for AI chatbots. The investigation is taking place in the context of recent fines imposed on tech giants, including Google and Apple.
European Commissioner for Competition, Teresa Ribera, emphasizes the importance of ensuring technological benefits for citizens and companies while preventing abuses of power by dominant firms. The investigation will cover most countries in the EEA, except for Italy, which has a separate procedure. Criticism from the U.S., including from former President Donald Trump, suggests tensions between the EU and American companies.
