On Thursday, the leaders of the European Union will meet in Brussels for an emergency summit dedicated to the situation in Greenland, following statements by American President Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to control Greenland, including through the possible purchase of the island, which has generated tensions with the locals and with Denmark, which holds authority over it.
He warned that Russia and China could take control of the Arctic if the U.S. does not acquire it. Additionally, Trump announced a series of 10% tariff increases against some European allies, including Denmark and other countries, until the U.S. obtains permission to buy Greenland. These tariffs will increase to 25% in June and will remain in effect until a deal is finalized.
