The plane carrying the Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prevot, was forced to make an emergency landing on the island of Saint Martin, part of the Antilles, on the night from Saturday to Sunday, during an economic and political mission in Latin America. The incident was caused by technical problems, including a malfunction in the engine and a fuel issue, which led to the aircraft turning back over Great Britain. The spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Audrey Jacquiez, emphasized that these incidents affect Belgium's "credibility" and its ability to participate in international summits.
Due to the emergency landing, Prevot missed the scheduled meetings at the EU and CELAC summit in Colombia. This mission, which runs until Thursday, aims to strengthen cooperation in combating cocaine trafficking, a major issue for Belgium, an important transit point for drugs in Europe.
