The Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, summoned the U.S. ambassador to Brussels, Bill White, after he posted a controversial message on Instagram mocking the Minister of Health, Frank Vandenbroucke. The post, which sparked a new diplomatic scandal, included an image of Vandenbroucke with the message 'Who is the biggest FAILURE in Belgium?' and a reference to his initiative to change alcohol consumption warnings.
Prévot criticized the insulting language used by the ambassador and announced that he would have to provide explanations. This situation comes in the context of a campaign by Belgian beer producers against the legislative changes proposed by Vandenbroucke.
This is not the first time Bill White has been summoned by Belgian authorities, as he was previously called in February for comments related to an investigation into antisemitism. The leader of the Vooruit party, Conner Rousseau, also criticized the ambassador's post, suggesting that he does not understand the Belgian healthcare system. The U.S. Embassy has not commented up to the time of the publication of this information.
