Elon Musk announced Monday that he intends to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States, starting next year. The statement was made on the X platform, but the billionaire did not specify how the distribution would be organized or whether the initiative had been officially approved.
Approximately 72 million children under the age of 18 live in the US, according to official census data for July 1, 2025. At Friday’s closing price of $146.03 per share, the total value of the offered stakes would amount to approximately $10.5 billion.
Musk owns approximately 4.8 billion SpaceX shares. If unallocated shares and stock options are included, his effective stake reaches 6.4 billion shares, representing 48.4% of the company.
“This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote in response to Anthropic’s announcement that it was creating a public-benefit fund. The artificial intelligence company intends to allocate 5% of its shares to the fund, with the possibility of additional contributions. SpaceX has not yet provided details about the plan.
