Elon Musk presented a Tesla Roadster prototype Thursday at the SpaceX base in Texas that, according to his claims, is capable of rising into the air and performing spectacular maneuvers without a driver. The demonstration was organized to show the public that the vehicle can perform controlled jumps and rotations, while Tesla says the model could enter production in 2028.
The two-seat sports car accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in less than one second. Using ten nozzles and high-pressure air tanks, the Roadster drove up a ramp, remained suspended with its wheels facing upward, rotated in the air, and landed. The vehicle later jumped over several Tesla cars and accelerated using jets mounted at the rear.
Musk said the demonstration was conducted without a real driver to avoid risks in the event of a failure. However, experts warn that such maneuvers do not necessarily demonstrate sustained flight capability. Roger Conner, a curator at the Smithsonian, considers it difficult to combine the requirements of an aircraft with those of a car. Specialists emphasize that the transition from vertical lift to forward movement remains the main challenge for eVTOL vehicles.
