Elon Musk has invested at least $276 million to support Republicans in the midterm congressional elections, consolidating his position as the party’s leading known funder. Most of the recent donations, worth $158 million, were directed to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main Republican super PAC involved in Senate races.
The amount covers donations made by Musk since July and was confirmed Monday by a spokesperson for America PAC, the billionaire’s main political group. The funds are being used, among other things, to preserve a Republican Senate seat in Texas, a key state for Musk’s business empire.
The billionaire also donated nearly $300 million during the 2024 presidential campaign in support of Donald Trump. The financial backing turned him into a target for Democrats, especially after Musk joined the Trump administration to lead the Department of Government Efficiency.
The relationship between the two later deteriorated, but appears to have improved. Last week, Trump awarded Musk the National Medal of Science. Campaigns and certain political committees must report their financial status to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday.
