The ECHR condemned Russia to pay 253 million euros to Georgia for violating the rights of the inhabitants of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, following the war in 2008.

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Russia must pay damages for the violation of the rights of about 29,000 residents in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, establishing that the demarcation lines imposed since 2009 are illegal. Although Russia is theoretically responsible for previous human rights violations, it refuses to pay the fines. The ECHR emphasized that most of the harm relates to illegal restrictions on access to housing and education for the victims.
