28 people were killed and 23 injured on Tuesday, following a drone attack on a market in Ghubaysh, a town in southern Sudan controlled by paramilitaries. According to the AFP news agency, medical sources and witnesses confirmed the incident.
The attack took place in a crowded restaurant, and witnesses stated that the drone initially struck a vehicle of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), killing three people, before heading towards the restaurant. The Sudanese army, involved in a conflict with the RSF paramilitaries since April 2023, has intensified drone attacks in recent months.
Although a military source denied responsibility, claiming that the army does not target civilians, the UN reported that since January, at least 880 civilians have been killed in drone attacks. The war in Sudan has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, leaving tens of thousands dead and displacing over 11 million people.
