An annual report by the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) highlights a dramatic decline in press freedom in South and North America. In the United States, Donald Trump's return to power has led to a significant drop in press freedom, falling from fourth to eleventh place in the IAPA ranking. The dismissal of over 500 employees from Voice of America and the 170 attacks on journalists in the past year underscore the deterioration of the situation. In South America, Venezuela and Nicaragua are classified as having nonexistent press freedom, while eight other countries, including Ecuador and Mexico, impose severe restrictions.
IAPA describes this year as one of the most difficult for journalism in the region, marked by crimes, arbitrary arrests, and impunity. The Dominican Republic stands out as the only country in the region that fully guarantees freedom of expression.
