The Aeon shopping center in Japan, destroyed after an earthquake, was just a month away from reopening after a major renovation.

The Aeon shopping center in the Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto, severely damaged following the earthquake on Tuesday and the subsequent explosion, is in the midst of a recovery process after having been reopened in June, following a major renovation done 10 years after the devastating earthquake of 2016. The complex, modernized with additional seismic safety measures and once again becoming one of the most important shopping centers in the region, was destroyed just a few weeks after its relaunch, while authorities continue the search for missing persons.
