The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, is facing a crucial election on Sunday, which could bring an end to 16 years of power. The elections are being closely watched, having the potential to shake not only Hungary but also Russia and could cause shockwaves in right-wing circles in the West, including at the White House, according to Reuters.

Orban, a eurosceptic nationalist, has been criticized for economic stagnation and rising living costs, and polls show that his party Fidesz is trailing behind the center-right opposition Tisza, led by Peter Magyar.

The vote, which will decide the composition of the 199-seat parliament, started at 6 a.m. and will end at 7 p.m.

Orban has framed the election as a choice between "war and peace," accusing Magyar of potentially involving Hungary in the conflict in Ukraine. While Orban benefits from the support of the Trump administration and the Kremlin, Magyar has gained the support of young voters, promising a change in the face of corruption and declining living standards.

The outcome of the vote remains uncertain, with analysts warning about the large number of undecided voters and the possible difficult legislative changes for a new government.
