Cuban authorities have released 14 people detained during the protests of July 2021, as part of an agreement with the Vatican and in the context of discussions with the USA.

The NGO Cubalex announced the release of 14 people detained during the anti-government protests in July 2021, confirming that this action is part of an agreement with the Vatican, a mediator between Cuba and the United States.

This decision was made shortly after Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated that the government is in discussions with Washington.

On Friday, the first prisoners were released in the context of international pressures, especially from former President Donald Trump, who intensified economic blockades against Cuba.

The human rights group Justicia11J reported that currently, Cuba has at least 760 political prisoners, including 358 detained for participating in the 2021 protests.

Cuban authorities have accused the U.S. of orchestrating these protests in an attempt to overthrow the communist government.
