On April 12, Hungarians are called to the polls to elect a new Parliament, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in power since 2010, faces a possible defeat. Independent polls show that his party, Fidesz, is being outpaced by Peter Magyar's Tisza formation, a former ally who has become a critic of Orban. Tisza has a stable lead of about 50%, while Fidesz is around 35%.
Orban, known for his "illiberal" democracy policy, has been supported by foreign right-wing leaders but faces internal discontent related to economic stagnation and corruption scandals. Magyar promises to fight against corruption and to unblock frozen European funds. He also promotes a pro-Western foreign policy, in contrast to Orban, who has tense relations with Brussels. Additionally, the far-right Our Homeland Party could enter Parliament, while other formations are below the electoral threshold.
