The conflict erupted after Sean Duffy, the acting administrator of NASA, announced the reopening of the bidding for the Artemis III contract, initially awarded to SpaceX, due to delays in the development of the Starship rocket. Duffy emphasized the importance of diversifying partners for the success of the American space program, aiming to return astronauts to the Moon before China achieves this goal. Elon Musk reacted vehemently on the social network X, accusing Duffy of undermining NASA and lacking the necessary competencies to coordinate the space program. Musk argued that SpaceX is making rapid progress and warned that the success of the competition depends on recognizing his company's achievements. NASA reaffirmed that it will collaborate with multiple companies to reduce risks and accelerate the development of necessary technologies. Duffy does not intend to lead the agency in the long term, but is committed to ensuring the continuity of the programs.
