The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has asked the United States to limit the illegal trafficking of weapons to drug cartels, following criticism from American President Donald Trump.

In a meeting with Latin American leaders, Trump described Mexico as the "epicenter of cartel violence" and announced the formation of a "military coalition" to combat these groups, including through the use of missiles.

In her response, Sheinbaum emphasized that 75% of the weapons used by criminal groups in Mexico come from the U.S., arguing that stopping this flow would reduce the power of the cartels. She also reaffirmed that Mexico will continue to collaborate with Washington, but opposes American military interventions on its territory, emphasizing that operations against organized crime are led by the Mexican armed forces.
