The Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced that three police officers and six members of the extremist group 'Islamic State' (IS) were killed on Monday following a clash in the north-west of the country. This operation took place after national raids in which 115 suspected militants were arrested, accused of planning attacks during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The clash occurred in Yalova, where the police intervened in a residence suspected of harboring militants.
During the operation, eight police officers and a night guard were injured, but not seriously. Authorities have intensified security measures, closing five schools and suspending the supply of natural gas and electricity in the area. The IS group has called for actions during the holiday season, particularly targeting non-Muslims, considering previous deadly attacks in Turkey, including a shooting at a club in Istanbul in 2017 that resulted in 39 deaths.
