The spokesperson of the ministry, Zhang Xiaogang, announced that He Weidong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, along with eight other officials, is under investigation for serious violations of party discipline, which have led to significant financial damages. He Weidong is the highest-ranking military official targeted in China's anti-corruption campaigns and has not been seen in public for months. He was previously the head of the Eastern Theater Command, responsible for operations against Taiwan in the event of conflict.
Among the officials under investigation is also the director of the political activities department of the commission. The announcement comes a few days before an important meeting of party leaders, led by President Xi Jinping, to set national objectives for the next five years.
